What's the difference between TED, TEDx, TEDxVitosha and TEDxWomen?
TED is the big brother in the family: it began in 1984 as a conference where technology, entertainment and design came together, and today covers almost all topics – from science to business to global issues – in more than 100 languages.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED created a program called TEDx. TEDx events are independently organized and surface ideas about the respective communities. They are true to the TED mission, devoted to spreading ideas. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. This video adds some colour to the explanation.
TEDxVitosha is the version of TEDx dedicated to surfacing hidden stories of Sofia, Bulgaria and our new international ex-pat community which is growing every year. It’s run entirely by volunteers who do it for the joy of it, fuelled by snacks and support and your ongoing feedback.
What is the schedule of the programme?
Applications for TEDxVitosha2020 are now open, so by the end of November 2019 we will be ready to announce our speakers. Sign up to TEDxVitosha mailing list here to get the latest news
I have an idea for TEDxVitosha but it’s not a full talk. Is it still worth me applying
Absolutely. TEDxVitosha is for finding new ideas and undiscovered voices. Our expert public speaking coaching will work with you to shape your idea into a great talk for a TEDxVitosha event.
Share your vision for your city, tell us about the world you want to live in, or showcase an amazing project you’re working on! Remember, a TED or TEDx talk is an idea worth spreading, so please do not submit purely inspirational or motivational talks or ideas that are inaccurate or advertise a specific company or product. Although many TED or TEDx talks are inspirational, it’s always the speaker’s great idea or brilliant new perspective that motivates the audience to make a positive change.
Our best speakers in the past have touched upon the importance of knowing our Bulgarian roots in the modern global world, argued the case of legalizing marihuana, shared insights from blind people or people who fight multiple sclerosis, demonstrated a lively way to teach science in schools and built companies on the belief that employees should be encouraged to bring their personal life to the office.
I’ve never done any public speaking and am pretty terrified about going on stage. Can I still apply to TEDx?
Yes! We’re not looking for professional speakers, and we’ll be with you throughout the process providing expert coaching and support to help you prepare for your TEDx talk. And we know everyone gets nervous before getting up on the stage, which is why TED created a whole playlist on the topic.
Do I have to live in Sofia to apply?
You don’t have to live in Sofia to participate, but there are a few important dates and rehearsals when applicants need to be in central Sofia. Write to us about it, we’ll respond with key dates.
